South Stars

Last weekend I attended my nephew’s high school graduation. He’s off to college, and understandably at his age, not sure what career he wants to pursue.  One thing he says he knows for sure, is that his career will not involve mathematics. At one point he was into the sciences, but just didn’t like or get the math. Well you’re young, I said, that could change. But if it doesn’t, that’s some valuable self-knowledge you have there. Knowing what you aren’t is just as important as knowing who you are.  This I believe is true for your career, your personal life and even your spiritual life.  Often to find the right direction for your life, your career, your faith, we have to correct our course after a bunch of misdirections. Christian thinker Rob Bell calls events, people and paths we discover we don’t want to follow ‘south stars.’  North stars are all the positive role models, aspirations and paths we hope to follow; and these get most of our attention. But our south stars might be even better teachers, because most often we don’t find our best way directly, we find it by facing our misdirections with humility and faith.
