Church is not just something we do on Sunday, it is something that by doing we become-we become participants, members of the Spiritual body of Christ. Yes our membership must first and foremost be local-here and now in this church with these people-but it is also meant to extend into the entire world, encompass our whole lives. Because in a very real way, God’s creation-the whole world-is God’s first and oldest church, and every one of God’s children have been called to serve it with their very lives. Russian theologian Paul Evdokimov puts it beautifully, “In the immense cathedral which is the universe of God, each man (or woman), whether scholar or manual laborer, is called to act as the priest of their whole life — to take all that is human, and to turn it into an offering and a hymn of glory.”
