The problem with ‘original sin’ is that it starts the greatest story ever told in the middle, not the beginning. We did fall and allowed evil into the world, true, but that is chapter three of Genesis. Chapter one is when almighty God made everything before us, galaxies, earth, oceans, whales, quarks and leptons and pronounced it good. That’s original blessing that continues today. Then He creates men and women, blesses us and makes us stewards of all creation. That’s original blessing, that continues today. And so the awesome blessing of creation and our lives must always be primary, and our falling away always secondary. Original sin, is bad theology because its bad math. So, like last week, I say let’s give up original sin for Lent, and instead reclaim our original blessing. For if we do, we understand better where Scriptures say we come from, and where with God’s grace we are returning to.
