You know today’s reading. We probably should know it by heart, that’s likely why our ancient lectionary assign it two times a year. Most people would say it is the most quoted lines in all the Gospels, what Martin Luther called the Gospel in miniature, summarizing salvation history.  ‘For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, so that everyone who believes in him may not perish but may have eternal life.’ (Jn 3:16). Now again, because the words are in English, so simple and so familiar to us, we think we know all they are saying, but often familiarity hides meaning. That’s when the more languages you know, the more you understand.
