Keeping it Real

Helena surely knew the importance of establishing the historical reality of Jesus, as several generations had passed since his life and death and the personal connection to him and his witnesses was fading. She basically made one of the first known archeological expeditions, going to Jerusalem with a team, seeking out and discovering fragments of the real cross Jesus was crucified on. She would build the great Cathedral of the Holy Sepulcher, a place of which Armenians are special caretakers, to make sure that generations forward would not succumb to muddled thinking. You can believe in Jesus or not, but you can’t pretend he never actually lived, died and said the things he said.  Helene discovered the cross and kept it real for generations to come. This challenge to discover and rediscover the cross, to keep it real from generation to generation, continues to this day and is now on us, albeit in different circumstances.
