Sacraments

The Sacraments at St. Hagop

In Armenian Church tradition, everything which is in and of the Church is sacramental, yet there are seven formal sacraments which are outward signs instituted by Christ to bring Grace. These seven sacraments allow us to re-live what has happened in the past, demonstrate in the present that Christ is with us, and look forward to our future with Him, through our lives- to eternity.

If you would like to make arrangements for one of the sacraments, please contact Rev. Fr. Hovnan Demerjian to ensure his and the church’s availability. All services follow the Canons of the Armenian Apostolic Orthodox Church and are performed in a combination of Armenian and English languages as appropriate.

Baptisms and Chrismations
“Rejoice Holy Church, a new Christian was baptized into Christ!”

Please try to schedule your baptism ceremony at least two months in advance by contacting our pastor. Fr. Hovnan will provide parents additional details and forms at that time. According to the Armenian Church Canons, a Baptism may only be performed once in a person’s lifetime, provided such Baptism was performed in a Christian Church and in the name of the Holy Trinity. At least one of the godparents must be a member of the Armenian Orthodox Church.

“They are no longer two, but one. May you grow old together on one pillow.”

Parishioners are asked to contact the pastor at least eight months prior to the date of a Wedding to confirm his and the sanctuary’s availability prior to making any other wedding arrangements. All weddings are to follow the Cannons of the Armenian Apostolic Orthodox Church. Fr. Hovnan must meet with couples at least twice before the wedding date for pre-marital preparation. The pastor will make all necessary arrangements for the deacon, organist and soloist, and will provide the couple with additional details and forms. Weddings may not take place on Sunday mornings or during Great Lent and Holy Week.

Funerals
Very truly, I tell you, unless a grain of wheat falls into the earth and dies, it remains just a single grain; but if it dies, it bears much fruit.”- John 12.24

Families should make arrangements with the Funeral Director of their choice. The Funeral Director will contact Fr. Hovnan to arrange the date and the time of the funeral service. Funerals may not be performed on religious holidays, major feast days, Saturdays after 3:00 p.m., or on Sundays.
