The disciples missed out on a lot with their eyes half closed to their master, on this day and so many other times, and of course so do we. As all stories of Christ, this one does not happen only once, but once and forever, repeating permanent truths about who God is and who we are. And the permanent truth about humanity is that we tend to live our lives half asleep, spiritually speaking. We hear often how we use only 5% of our minds at any given point, well we use even less of our souls. We blindly follow the false gods of pride, materialism and comfort rather than opening our eyes to the God who gifts us everything. We numb our senses scrolling through meaningless content rather than immerse ourselves in God’s life-giving words. In this sleepy state we miss out on God’s great revelations to us and become resigned to losing, forgetting God’s knack for turning losers into winners.
