So what is lament? The shortest definition of lament is a prayer in pain that leads to trust. The Psalms are full of Laments. Our Ter Voghormea is a lament. Beating our breast and saying Vay Indz, Vay Indz during Confession is a Lament. Gregory of Narek wrote an entire famous Book of Lamentations. Lament was traditionally the most common form of prayer in our tradition and the entire Christian tradition, you can see it in the name we give our Sunday mass, Soorp Badarak the Holy Sacrifice. What was Christ’s sacrifice but a prayer in pain, a cross to bear, that leads to trust and a new kingdom on Earth as it is in Heaven? What is our sacrifice, our Badarak to be for those who follow and take the name of Christ as Christians?
