After many years in Monastic life, Syncletica teaches this: ‘If you find yourself in a monastery do not switch to another place, for that will harm you a great deal. Just as the bird who abandons the eggs she was sitting on prevents them from hatching, so the monk or the nun grows cold and their faith dies, when they go from one place to another.’ Put in modern terms, Amma Syncletica is warning us all not to go from job to job, city to city, church to church. For somehow in running from one to another we are really running from ourselves and whatever difficult lesson staying put would have us learn. Instead, she is encouraging us to stay, nurture and suffer faithfully whatever new life is being hatched within us, because though birth is always painful, it always brings forth new life.
