Now and Not Yet

Beloved, we are God’s children now; what we will be has not yet been revealed.—1 Jn. 3:2-4

For whatever reasons, God chooses not to reveal himself fully until the time is right, until his people are right. And because none of us like it when we aren’t in on the secret, we tend to make up stuff about heaven to fill in the gaps. I think that’s why there are dozens of new books every year speculating about heaven.  The latest craze is by doctors outlining near death experiences; My Time in Heaven, Hello from Heaven, Everything You Want to Know of Heaven. The best of these books simply say that people experience something more real than real when they near death. The worst are like cartoon theology, like bad jokes of lawyers, doctors and priests dialoguing with St. Peter at the pearly gates. (I had such a bad joke for you, but decide to cut it and tell you during coffee hour).
