I was getting an oil change for the church car last week and by the garage across the street I saw a sign ‘Free brake check, stop by if you can!’ It gave me a laugh and then gave me pause to reflect on a theme of all our readings of these past weeks. The readings from the Letter of Paul to the Romans have been all about sin. Not sin as some moralistic, man made list of naughty and nice, but the original meaning of sin, our flawed state of being, separated from God. Paul makes a bold confession about his battle with sin in the seventh chapter of his letter; “I do not understand what I do. For what I want to do, I do not do, but what I hate, I do instead. Paul is saying that sin runs deeper than our own will; it is out of our full control. It is like we are in a car with bad breaks. How can we stop to get them fixed?
